Maria Charalambous was born in 1999 in Nicosia. After graduating from high school, she studied Contemporary Dance and Dance Pedagogy at the Iwanson International School of Contemporary Dance in Munich, Germany. Maria performed as a dancer in the “Festival Junger Tanz” and assisted in “Festspielhaus –Kindertanz Festival” Baden Baden. She also received a scholarship for “Tanzwerkstatt Europa” to work with Dominique Mercy, a former dancer from TanztheaterWuppertal Pina Bausch and Inaki Azpillaga from Ultima Vez.
Her performances questioning comprehensive embodiment in its diverse existences, the work builds scenes as well as interfaces between different art forms. Her work is characterized by experimental movement. She also engages in extending choreographic as well as somatic practices by combining dance and movement with other domains such as texts, theatre, drawings, pictures, sounds and materials. She draws on emotional, psychological, and cultural positions, exploring and embodying physical as well as theatrical expressions that activate various psychosomatic states.
